In this disease we have inflammation, pain, stiffness in our joints due to various reason like deterioration of bones, overuse of joints in sports, autoimmune disorders, uric crystals deposited in joints, etc. This condition can be worse in aged person.

In India 180 million people is diagnosed with arthritis (source-The New Indian Express, ICMR) and some of them don’t know the cause of their joint pain. They just know their knee got hurt and swelled in morning and got stiffed.


Symptoms and Cause

Joint Pain, Inflammation in joints, Swelling, stiffness in joints specially in morning, restricted movements of joints, sometimes fever also.

Arthritis can also be genetically inherited in you, or also develop in later age. Old injuries can be also be a caused of this, in some people obesity is the reason, some kind of autoimmune disorder also can be a reason of this.


Types

1.OSTEOARTHRITIS

 It’s a degenerative disease, cartilage got impair and because of this bone rubbed with each other and got inflamed. Inflammation in joints, and this caused the restriction in movement. This effect the knees, hips, hand and spine joints.

Causes– Aging, family history, joint injury, obesity, poor posture. Women have high risk of inherit, Sports players.

Prevention– Maintain a healthy weight, Do light exercises. Take vitamin D and calcium rich diet, avoid smoke and alcohol, Do posture exercise.

Diet Tips

Anti-inflammatory foods – turmeric, berries, green leafy vegetables, ginger, extra virgin olive oil. Calcium rich foods – Ragi, Dahi, Sesame seeds, Leafy green vegetables, almonds.

Vitamin D rich foods – mushrooms, egg yolks, low fat milk, sunlight 5–10 mins.

Avoid – Processed foods, deep fried foods, sugary drinks.

2.Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

It’s an autoimmune disorder. In RA, our immune system attacks our own joints. This causes swelling, pain, degeneration of cartilage and bone.

There is a high risk of RA in females during pregnancy. Even when they conceive, sometimes baby cells come out of placenta and sensitized mother’s immune system to leaking enzymes or proteins and after delivery those cells co-relate with joints that’s why immune system attacks the joints of mother. This disease also caused unexplained anemia, hypothyroidism, diabetes.

We can control RA like Diabetes, but we can’t cure RA, for controlling RA we have to take medicine.

Prevention – Regular exercise, manage healthy weight, stress management & physiotherapy can reduce it.

Diet Tips– Intake of Omega 3 foods – salmon, flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, algae oil (seaweed).
Anti-inflammatory foods – green leafy vegetables, fruits, garlic, calcium and vitamin D rich foods.
Avoid- Fried foods, processed sugar, refined carbs, soft drinks, alcohol, smoke, gluten in some cases.


3.Gout

In gout we have high uric acid level in our body (Hyperuricemia). When we consume lots of purines rich foods, our body metabolize it, waste of purine is uric acid and if these are too much in our body, it can’t excrete them efficiently, then uric acid deposited in our joints and combined lots of them make uric crystals and those uric crystals can cause inflammation in joints and even can develop uric stones in kidney.

Cause – Indigestion of purines cause uric crystals. Alcohol (It contains high levels of uric acid and impair the kidney ability to eliminate it). Sugary drinks, kidney problems, Obesity, Diuretics.

Prevention – light exercise, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, Monitor your uric acid level. Avoid crash diet or fasting. Stress management.

Diet tips – Low fat dairy product, whole grain, vegetables (greens), fruits (cherry, amla, apple), green tea, lemon water.

4.Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA)

This is an autoimmune disorder. It can also be found in those who already diagnosed with psoriasis (itchy, scaly patches on the skin). In this our immune system attacks our joints and our skin tissues. joints got inflammation, pain by which stiffness and red scaly patches can appear on the skin. PsA is similar like RA but got worse with skin issue. No particular cause for this disease but got trigger by genetics or environmental changes.

Prevention – Low impact exercise. Maintain healthy weight. Control your stress. Medication, breathing exercise.

Diet Tips – Anti-inflammatory foods, Stay hydrated, Vitamin D or Calcium rich foods.

5.Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)

This is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory arthritis, its mainly affects spine and sacroiliac joints (joints btw Back and Pelvis) This disease fuse the vertebrae bone with each other and look alike a one bone this caused restricted and painful movement, can also permanently bend your posture. It is more common in Males (age group of 15-25 yrs starting with Sacroiliitis (inflammation of sacrum and ilium it can cause pain in the lower back, hips or legs).

There is no exact cause of AS but genetics + immune system malfunction together and trigger this.

Cause – HLA-B27 gene positive males have high risk of AS. Family history also be an reason.

Prevention – Daily stretching, Posture exercise, Regular body movement, Swimming, Yoga, Physiotherapy, Deep breathing exercise, avoid long sitting.

Diet Tips – Anti-inflammatory foods. Stay hydrated, Vitamin D or Calcium rich foods.
